WHAT TO BRING TO A WEEK OF SCHOOL

Almost everything is included in one price when you come to Otter Bar, but there are a few things to bring with you depending on the week you're coming and the time of year. Here is a list to help you plan your week at Otter Bar.

KAYAK EQUIPMENT:

Otter Bar provides all equipment for Beginning and Basic Intermediate classes. If you are taking an Intermediate or Advanced class you should bring your own equipment. If you are flying, you should bring your personal paddling gear and we will lend you a paddle and kayak. If you borrow our equipment you are responsible for returning it in the same condition. There is no extra charge for this. You should try to bring your own paddling gear if you have it. We have a full range of the latest models of kayaks for you to try throughout your week.

PADDLING CLOTHES:

  • We provide paddling jackets and pile paddling sweaters to keep you warm. During the months of May and June you need to bring a wet suit, dry top or dry suit. (The wet suit we recommend is a 1/8" Farmer John.)
  • Bring long underwear, like Capiline or polypropylene. Chances are you will not need these things during the months of July, August and September, but better to be safe than sorry. You may want to check with us shortly before your week begins to see what the weather is doing and what folks are wearing.
  • You will also need some sort of water shoes to wear while kayaking. Wet suit booties work best. Old tennis shoes & river sandals (Teva type) work but a soft bootie is best. We sell these in our shop.
  • Bring a cap or visor with a brim that will fit under a kayak helmet for sun protection. You can purchase an Otter Bar cap when you get here if you like.

Specialized Mountain Bikes are available to borrow.

You may borrow a bike to ride after or before your day of paddling. We ask that you do not ride our bikes on trails. The rides on the roads around here are wonderful! You won't be disappointed! It is up to the individual's energy level as when they will find time to ride, but there is often time on our mid-week 'rest day'; before breakfast or in the afternoons after you get back from paddling. If you're a Road Biker, definitely bring your road bike! This is amazing road biking country!

PERSONAL STUFF

Clothes: Otter Bar is casual! We live in Tee shirts, shorts, jeans, bathing suits and sandals for the most part. May and part of June can be rainy and cool, so bring something for this weather. A jacket or sweater and a pair of long pants is always a good idea to have, no matter what time of year you're coming.

We have a 'No Shoes In The Lodge' policy, so you might want to bring some house-slippers/socks to wear inside.

WE PROVIDE:

Towels (bath & beach); shampoo/conditioner; soap; and basic first aid needs.

MEALS:

We serve 3 meals a day. If you have any particular dietary needs, please let us know before you arrive. Wine, juice and water are served with dinner. If you want any other alcoholic beverages, beer, soda pop or snacks, you should bring them with you, or buy it at our local store. There is a refrigerator for your use.
